Hey Guys!

So I decided to assign myself to doing 100 portraits this summer. Which is funny, because I have three jobs. Oh ya, and a bunch of new summer friends, oh, and a boy. BUT!! I am going to do i!t i swear! even though I only have 8 and like half of the summer is over aaaaaaaah!

Anyways, feedback would be mucho appreciated. the quality of these pictures is a little ick but there you have it! I am lazy and don't want to photoshop them to their true look. hopefully more will come soooon!

Hope you are all having a great summer! xoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxoxoxox

question- are these in chronological order?

i love them! thinking about your portraits from last semester- to me it looks like your knowledge/use of color is getting more advanced!

my faves are your second self-port (though i'm not sure about the neck portion, it doesn't look like it's turning. i think it might have to do with how dark it is right under the jawline? but yea the blue, esp on the face, is superb) and the blonde in the yellow shirt at the bottom. the first thing that caught my eye was the tip of her nose... weird...

these totally remind me of... some artist. i don't have enough art history background in me to know right off the top of my head... help me out- anyone?

props to you katherine my sweet! they're lovely!

Katherine! You have 8 paintings, that’s a big start. Here are my opinions/suggestions:

1. I think the top half of this is working very nicely. There’s something very captivating yet distant about her gaze. Where it doesn’t work for me is from the bottom lip down. The bottom part seems less considered/separate from the rest of the portrait.

2. & 3. Self portraits! The portrait on the top seems more solid structurally. You seem to have blocked things in more accurately. The gaze (like the 1st one) seems to also attract and repel at the same time. I like what’s happening in the second portrait a lot. You seem to be experimenting more with color and the drawing seems to be a little more free. Where you loose me is the neck. It doesn’t seem connected to the rest of the head. I think it’s a little too long and would benefit from more shadow (dark colors) under the chin?

4. This one is probably my favorite. The composition is the strongest here. The square format fits the shape of the sitters face well. The colors are also working nicely—the blue in the hair, the green on the cheek and the salmon on the nose. The left (her right) eye is my favorite part.

5. I think the portrait is working really nicely here. Your brush strokes are beautiful. I think her head/hair got a little too large (unless you’re exaggerating it on purpose). I also really like how you placed the ear.

6. This portrait reminds me of Alice Neel. I think it’s the colors. I tried finding an example of what I mean, but I think if you look at a bunch of her images you’ll understand. There’s also a slender book of hers at Mugar.

7. I’m with Jane. I really like this portrait. The way you’ve handled the yellow in various spots of the canvas—the hair vs. the shirt with a spot on the forehead makes magical connections. My suggestion is that the transition between the cheek bone and neck could have been more gradual (I think it gets a little too light). For me the gesture is really strong.

8. This portrait seems different from the rest. It seems so much more internal/mythical than the rest. To me this seems like the essence of a woman rather than a specific portrait. The orange! The blue! The green! The yellow!

KEEEP GOING KATHERINE!!!!
